Where is the course?

Kailash Akhara (KA) is the international headquarters for DHARMA INC, an International Yoga educational center. KA is located in the beautiful hills of northern Thailand near the famed Mekong river. The center sits on over 25 acres of lush land, with inspiring mountain views, numerous ponds, gardens and forested areas. Our land is cultivated in a sustainable fashion, guided by the principles of permaculture. The stunning natural scenery provides an idyllic setting to practice, study, contemplate and relax.

Accommodations (Dependent on availability)

For all of our room options below, the bathroom consists of individually stalled composting toilets and private hot water showers in a shared bathhouse.

Shared Bunk

Our guesthouse has four shared bunkrooms available.  Each bunkroom has two wooden bunk beds complete with pillow, bedding and fan.  Guests may share this room with three other people of the same sex.  This room is included in the price of the retreat.

Twin Share Double

Our guesthouse has three twin share rooms available.  Each Twin room has two single beds complete with pillow, bedding and fan.  Guests may share this room with one other person of the same sex.  There is an additional charge of 200 THB per night for the Twin Share Double.

Private King

Our guesthouse has six Private King rooms available. Each King room has one king bed complete with pillow, bedding and fan.  There is an additional 400 THB per night for the Private King room.

What will we do every day?

Daily schedule – Our day will include a balance of hands-on work and classroom time. We’ll get up about 630, eat breakfast at  7, talk about what we’ll do for the day, have a few classes, eat lunch, take a siesta, have an afternoon work session (or the other way around), break, eat dinner, have an evening activity like watching a permaculture-related movie or doing an activity, then go to bed around 9 or 10.

Daily practice – During work sessions, we’ll be working on some of the following projects:

  • Water – Install ponds, greywater and water filtration systems
  • Garden and compost  – Build compost piles and garden features
  • Building – Practice building with earth bags and adobe earth bricks.

Permaculture Design Course (PDC) curriculum

The course will include lessons and discussions on all aspects of permaculture. More information about the Permaville Course can be found at Permaculture Design Course information. The following curriculum will be covered throughout the month:

Overview

  • Introduction to Permaculture, Principles and Goals, Design Methodology, Patterns in Nature, Urban Design, Climates and Microclimates

Project Plan

  • Physical areas – Earthworks, Natural building, Water, Sanitation, Soil, Nursery, Gardening, Trees and forests, Animals, Kitchen, Environment
  • Technical areas – Appropriate technology, Electricity, Mechanics, Economics
  • Social areas – Healthcare and Hygiene, Youth and Family, Education, Culture

Implementation

  • Eco-village Design, Project planning, Management, Operations

$600 (18,000 baht).

Fee covers food, lodging and program costs for 3 weeks.

$200 is needed to reserve your slot in the course. The remainder is due (Thai Baht cash preferable or paypal) on the first day of the course.  Please Note: No refunds will be given 4 weeks before start date.

What to bring

Bring plenty of clothes you don’t mind getting dirty, also a few other changes of comfortable clothes, sandals or flip flops, toiletries, a basic first aid kit, sunblock, water bottle, rain jacket, sunglasses, hat, working gloves, closed toed shoes, a notepad/pens, mosquito repellent. Only bring natural soaps and deodorants, please. Wifi is available at Kailash Akhara. Kailash Akhara will supply all tools and project materials. 

Meet our facilitators

The course will be facilitated by permaculturists Brian Newhouse, Ben Dunn and Howard Story (Director and CEO of WWOOF Thailand).

profile picBrian Newhouse is the founder of Permaville and author of The Permaville Book. Since 2003, he has worked on projects in the fields of education, sanitation, water, construction and renewable energy across eight countries. He has taught high school as a Peace Corps Volunteer in the Cape Verde Islands, Africa. He has rebuilt schools with All Hands Volunteers in Haiti,  and he’s led water installations and natural building projects at Panya, a permaculture community in northern Thailand. Browse through his work portfolio at www.bananadog.co.

imageBen Dunn is a trained Mechanical Engineer from Australia. He completed a Permaculture Design Course at the Panya Project in Thailand in 2013. He then became a long term member at the Panya Project and gained much experience in all aspects of Permaculture with a specific focus towards Natural Building. His focus now is towards Plant Propagation and Nursery Management. He is interested in learning more about all aspects of permaculture and sharing his knowledge and experience with anyone willing to learn.

HowardStory   Born in Canada, Howard Story has traveled and lived in 40 countries. In his previous life he was an executive with International Business Machines (IBM). He holds a BA in Natural Resource Economics a BSc. in Science and a MA in Education. He is the founding Director and CEO of WWOOF Thailand, a member of the UN International Federation of Organic Associations and Movements (IFOAM) and a student of the IFOAM Academy for Organic Excellence. He holds a PDC certification and a PDC teachers certificate. He is an expert educator, training consultant with Multinational and Multicultural organizations. His disciplines include Permaculture, Education, IT and Science.  Projects include: FoodTank.com advisor Asia, Permaculture consultant Asia, Sustainable community development Asia, Food sovereignty Asia/Africa, Community resilience, IFOAM SE Asia OLC, Trans-formative Food Systems, short chain food systems, markets and food resiliency, mitigating climate change with permaculture, natural and organic food, local farmer empowerment, family and community resilience, food sovereignty, organic farm development across SE Asia.
